Default How to open a program that won't open in Windows XP?

Isn't there something you can hit to open say an old video game on Windows 95 or DOS so it will run?

I want to get Shogun: Total War but it doesn't work on Windows XP.

I've never actually had to do it so I'm not sure if it will work but I know you can right click on the shortcut and go under the compatibility tab and you can set it to run as if it were in windows 95 or something like that. Like i said I've never tried it I just saw it once so I could be completely off
