just like the title says -- I downloaded a few songs from the web, and I can't play them.

I tried winamp for my audio files a long time ago; I wasn't impressed, and it started causing problems with my system, so I got rid of it.

Analyze the file using a program like GSPOT which will tell you exactly what codec you need to run the file.

You can get gspot (for free) here:
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

It's a great program. Once you know the right file format, you can do a Google search for it and find a codec you need to play that file.
