how do I backup my registry?

I hope this is the right place to post this... I'm new here!
What file or files do I need to backup to backup the registry on a Win ME machine? Are there any other system files that I should backup?I will be formatting my hdd soon and want to have everything backed up to CDs.
Also, anyone know of a good backup program that I can download (right now I'm just burning the files directly) that will allow me to backup to CDRWs and save the backup sets so I can backup regularly to CDRWs and just backup changed and new files (I am not sure of the correct term for this).

to back up registry - go into regedit -> file -> export
