Hi!
I have a Compaq Presario S6500NX. My computer froze last friday after acting weird and sluggish for about 2 days. I held down the power button to turn off the computer. I waited a couple of minutes before turning it back on. After rebooting the computer, it went to a screen saying that: "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
System32\Drivers\isapnp.sys

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

I had to reorder the recovery disks (there are 8 of them).

My question is what do i do now? Do i need to back up my hard drive before attempting the repair? I do not want to lose any data or software.

If i do need to back it up, where should i take it?

Also can someone give me a detailed walkthrough about how to use the disks?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. using XP

try to back up the basic files that are essential to another comp, hard drive, or dvd. The recovery thing implies that you need the windows re installation cd, which should only be that single cd, to copy back the windows files to the comp.

OMG.......ur not alone duncod2, i disabled my graphics card *ATI*, because i was stupid n my computer was going slow as ****, i did virus checks the day before it happened n i know i didnt look at porn at the time *cough*, tried updating the latest driver that supports my ATI card, but then when i checked info, says unknown, unavailable, etc. So, i disabled it, to see what it would do, but then the same message came up on my screen too.

here's what mine said:

"Windows could not start because of the following file is missing or corrupt:

\Windows\System32\Config\System

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.

Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

thing is, my computer was built for me, so i dont have Windows XP Pro disc, so i tried downloading Windows XP Pro original boot disk on 6 floppys off microsoft.com, then xfered it to a CD-R, but it wouldnt read it. I used a floppy drive, but didnt do anything, so then i redid all the floppys, but this time, Windows XP Pro SP2 on the floppys, xfer to differ CD-R, doesnt work too, so now my only hope to fix my computer is to order Windows XP Pro SP2 Setup CD/DVD from newegg.com, or have my oldest brother make contact with his friend who helped build my computer *he worked in a placed called iGameLan, but it ran out of business this year, they started last year*. He hasnt made much contact yet, but i know for a fact that my bro's friend has Windows XP Pro SP2 CD/DVD. It's cheaper to drop off my computer at my bro's friend's house, but i dont know where he lives, i need to get that info from my bro. I asked the Geek Squad if they can help, but they said it would be illegal to fix my computer that way.

my computer has be broken since early Feburary, and now i lost all my Diablo 2 chars, 12-15 to be exact, because of my stupidity. I checked task manager n im pretty sure nothing was using my AMD CPU 100%. I WAS FREAKIN OUT, i didnt know what else to do.

whew...........sry, im been having stressful times just taking turns using this computer to do homework n stuff, if any of u have help for me, n duncod2, please respond.
