Help!!

Has anyone ever encountered spyware that blocks task manager from running? I came across this yesterday, but I am not sure which spyware program is causing this. Using Sysinternals process explorer, and Killbox, I removed anything that didn't belong. After a reboot Windows explorer wouldn't load. The only thing visible was the background. Safe mode would not load either. I created a test environment, and loaded the machine with everything I could find, so I could try out some new utilities that I found. The program that seems to be causing this, runs in the tray and has a red circle with a white x. It flashes a balloon that says you computer is infected with spyware. Any ideas to what this program may be? Any help would be appreciated.
