HD free space gone

I decided to wipe out my HD and reinstall the OS. I boot my computer with a boot CD (DOS) and delete two partitions that I have, one with the OS (about 5 Gb) and the other (about 35Gb). After that, it says "8024.6 Mb" of free space. "No partitions defined yet"
Any idea why it went from about 40 to 8 Gb?

Well my first guess would be that it is a limitation of DOS. You can use the XP Disc to delete and create partitions as well. Along with things like GParted which is also free.

Try using the XP Disk and see if there is any change.
