Yes, if you get those disks, you should be able reinstall Windows with your existing key, and get back on track

This is such a PITA, I can not for the life of me find the model number of this computer! It is a Compaq Presario and has the number 5000 on the front but it is just the 5000 series the actual model number is supposed to be on a sticker on the front. The only number I find is "spider D/REM KMAT CTO" and when I type that number or any portion of it on the website nothing comes even remotely close to this machine? I guess a phone call is in order, unfourtanetly

Just if you are interested; Dell also have a hidden partion at the start of the drive called DELL_UTILITIES that performs the same funcion.

Interestingly, if you boot through that partition without the CD in the drive Windows will suddenly recognise this partition and mount it, which allows you to backup the files from it very easily. It is usually a 30 MB partition, of which 1.33 is used.

borrow an xp cd from somebody and install xp using their key (if your cd key works here during install, use it. but because there are so many different version of xp, it don't always work here). when you go to activate it, it won't activate (for obvious reasons), but you have an option to change your key. enter your serial and the activation will go through

Deathwalker, the original HD is screwed, thats why I have this dillema to begin with. This thread may be going to the shady side but at that risk, if I install XP (from wherever) and it activates all is well?

yes if you did like I said and it isn't illegal that way. keeping his key is (it won't let you activate anyway with his key)

You are correct, HOWEVER... If you lose a hard drive you will have problems, period.
