Hard Drive Recovery?

Hello. I was working on a friend's computer at home, and I completely forgot to back up their pictures to my External Hard Drive, and then formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Vista on it... Ive tried some software, but it didnt find them? Any suggestions?

Hopefully I am wrong but I am pretty sure when you format a HDD you delete all of the data that was on it before the format which means those pictures, since they weren't backed up, are probably lost. I'm not 100% sure about it so hopefully I'm wrong and somebody else can give you an idea.

The only chance you have is using a program called Recuva.
