Default Hard drive constantly spinning in Vista?

Its not ALL the time but like sometimes it would be silent then ill go out of the room for 30mins or so and when i come back i can hear the HDD spinning as if im doing a virus scan or something when all its doing is sat on my desktop? it could be doing this for an hour before it stops, is that normal?

Ive turned off indexing before anyone says it, and also my CPU usage isnt effected by this

Did you turn off Windows Defender?
