Get Boot Screens to Show Up on External HDMI Monitor

I currently have a laptop with a busted screen with HDMI as the only other output signal. I've also been experience freezes and hangs so I want to try and use the Reset or Refresh options of Win 8.1. However those only seem to display in the laptop screen. Is it possible to still access these settings? I've done some Googling and there were ideas of changing signal output priority and tearing down the laptop to disconnect the actual cable.

Closing the lid while the monitor is connected should work as well.

Closing the laptop while booting did not work, so I ended up just disconnecting the cable the screen.
