As for the ports, you need to forward port 21 (or whatever he set the default port to), and TCP and UDP checked, and the local IP of the server PC. Then, you can use a service such as no-ip.com to get a free domain (mine's ftp://calc.servegame.com) to mask your IP and make an easy to remember option.
