Default Freeware for digital photography

I'm a teacher and my school has spent so much money on lenses and cameras lately that we are loathe to spend more on software. I also personally always seem to need software that I don't have.

So for myself and the kids I'm trying to compile a list of good software for photo editing that's free. I'd like to ask your opinions of what's best out there and where to find it.

During my research I ran across this excellent list of freeware:,287.0.html

and in it are some seemingly good freeware for photographers. But I'd like to know what on that list you're finding worthwhile or particularly where else I could go. Thanks.

I use PS myself, but the gimp is always touted as the free photoshop, and now they have it for windows.

With all due respect John, I am the head of IT and I have it on good authority. If you type "Google" into Google, you can break the Internet. So please, no one try it, even for a joke.........It's not a laughing matter. You can break the Internet.
