Formatting in XP pro

I hate to ask such a newbish question, but here goes.

Can someone explain how to properly wipe my C drive and re install XP Pro to it without wiping out everything I have on my D drive please ?

I can't get my CD rom to boot either, so I assume I need to make the 6 boot discs from Microsoft ?

ok, the easiest way to format your C: drive with XP is to use any boot disk (eg. Win9x) and go into dos prompt as if you were using another operating system, the type in the following text

format C:

then agree with it to allow it to format
