Default The file cannot be played on the specified MCI device

I have MP3 joiner and Splitter 2.8 on my XP.
When I tried to open a MP3 track in the MP3 Splitter Window, I received this error message:
[The file cannot be played on the specified MCI device...]

Please help if you could!

1. Are you sure it is a MP3 file?
2. Are you sure that the applicaitona is a full version not a trial?
3. Have you tried Audicity?
