Extracting content from DVDs

I am in a media studies course at school and as part of an assignment we have to make a documentary. I would like to include about 30 seconds of a New Zealand television series in the documentary. The only issue is that it is on DVD.

Is there a way (either using PC or Mac) to extract some scenes from a DVD (one that is encrypted in this case) that can then be added into a movie editing suite such as Windows Movie Maker, or iMovie.

From my understanding, copyright laws get a little wishy washy when it comes to eductional use so I am not sure of the legality of this process. I am not interested in doing this for personal use after I have finished the documentary. I would also appreciate help - if you don't want to help me with my project then please don't post on how this could be/is illegal.

Use DVD Shrink to extract if and you can view scenes separately.

Use DVD Dycrypter and DVD Shrink.... Search hard for them damn DRM, digital millenium, RIAA has stopped distrobution.

Its not hard to find them. You can find them easily just doing a search.
