excel issue

here at my job we use some rather large excel workbooks. some are huge, some are small. there are no formulas in any of the sheets. They are shared by multiple users on a file server. I have tried a lot of obvious things to try to get these saves to take place quicker with little success. Could a few peopel maybe give me some ideas that might not be really obvious..ie "make sure a bunch of users are not in the file at the same time, or how is your network bandwidth" i need some more indepth possibilities.

make the files availiable offline and automatically cache local copies? i'm not sure how well that would work out with multiple users though.

i'll be interested to see if someone comes up with a solution because i really can't see how it can be done.

switch to a database server. ie SQL

development would prolly be expensive and/or take a while.

What about switching to an access database. where the backend portion of database lies on server. and the frontend entry portion is on each work station. I currently use this setup for atleast 15 users at one time.
