Default edit freeware code?

hey guys! i have a friend that wants to edit a freeware program. he said he used to do it in the olden days (he's like 55) but he doesn't know how to do it now. is there a way to pull up the code? I opened it in notepad but it was all wierd characters and at the top it says This program must be run under Win32. wtf?
