Question Which DVD Authoring Software Should I Use?

I need to make a compilation DVD of all the short films that our media studies class made, and put them onto one DVD.

The only problem I face is the the DVD authoring software I have can not use .avi files properly and ends up squashing them. So which of the following should I do?

1. I can convert all the .avi files into .mov files and use the DVD software at school

2. I use a PC based DVD authoring programmer that can handle .avi files. If this is the better option, are then any good free software titles out there that can handle .avi?
