Default Dual Core and Software

Am I right to in believing that in order to 100% benefit from a dual core (Pentium D 830) processor is to run ONLY dual core supported software on the system.???

What is dual core supported software, examples.
What will happen if I run any other software on the system , will it just run on a single core ??

Very confusing, anyone who can help me?

thank you

Pentium 4 Prescott 3.0 E (478 socket)
Radeon 7500 64mb (I know ... (^_^)
when i get around to it)
Samsung PC3200 512mb x 2 (DUAL SOCKET)
