If I install XP first, (on the same hard drive) Ubuntu has a thing to allow me to dual boot, correct?

Or would it be easier to use two hard drives?

You will have to partition the hard drive. Can not install XP and Ubuntu on the same hard drive. They use different file systems.

Not what I asked. I know that. Same hard drive, different partition, or dfifferent hard drives. But if I setup XP first, will Ubuntu automatically notice that so I can set up a dual boot system?

Yes it is. You said nothing of using partitions or anything like that you said using a hard drive. That is why i said you had to use partitions.

But to answer your question now. Yes. GRUB will notice that you have XP installed and allow you to dual boot.

try wubi, it allows ubuntu to be installed and a dual boot to be made but you can uninstall it from the add/remove programs in xp so it is easy to take it off if things don't work out and there is no partitioning needed.
