I'm writing for a friend of mine who has xp. She can't open attachments .docx - I know its something to do with win7, (she has xp) - You can tell the doc wont open unless its associated with something. Would not open in Word (I presume she has an earlier version than the latest Word document.

Why does this happen and how to fix please?

The .docx format is a newer format introduced and used in Office 2007, and still used in 2010.
You need to install this Compatibility Pack so that she can view the new format in older versions of Office.

Or just save the file as a .doc and resend it to her. She you click save as, choose Word 97 - 2003 Document (which is .doc) from the dropdown list. If you don't want to do that as Yami suggested the other user (who wants to open the .docx) needs to install the compatibility pack (it's free, tell her too google it).
