How does it freeze up? Loading the CD wont go any further? HDD working? Sounds from hte CPU? Anything? Freezes can be due to many things. We have to try and sort out what it could be by what you are hearing or not hearing.

well, basically by freezing up, it means that it gets stuck at the "Press any key to boot....." stage. remains stuck at that screen until i turn the laptop over and remove the battery. its a laptop, not a desktop.

Could be a problem with the optical drive or a need to use a lens cleaner. I have one here where you restart several times in order to boot any disk about to be tossed.
