often the lastest driver isn't what you want, it depends on how your system is set up. Certain drivers might screw with system and make stuff like that happen.
If its a VIA then there are 4in1 drivers out there for the miniport support of AGP which especially had problems with certain configs and ATI cards. It was considered a priority driver update, so in this case that is why I've suggest this. However, the system specs are not there so its a little hard to determine if this is the root cause or not.
