I was just wondering, what does the disk defragmenter actually do? I thought it sorts files, but all my files seem to be in the same place once the defragmentation is done.

Defragmenting just rearanges things to speed things up. You usually dont notice a physical change. That is because it doesnt literrally move programs around.

When you add or delete lots of files, the drive tends to get fragmented, the disk defragmenter fragments back back together so that the files can be accessed without delay and the system works smooth. I used to use the windows tool, but now shifted to an external one for a faster defrag and the scheduling features.

I defrag, feel its worth completing just as any other maintenance
task.. not uncommon for file systems to get badly fragged even with
large drive nowadays, they can get loaded with junk in no time. I use
a commercial tool.

Here's a tutorial on this very forum on defrag, check it out. Explains
the stuff pretty well.
