A process called dfrgntfs.exe likes to run on my system every so often when I let it idle. Its something to do with windows defrag, I know this much. HOWEVER, It does it randomly, does not actually defrag my HD, and will NOT shut itself off. The only way I can get it off is to reset my system which takes a good 5-10 minutes as it tries to consolidate the defragmenting process that it thinks is happening. Now I wouldnt mind an idle process, if it a) stopped when I came back from being idle and b) didnt take up nearly all of my system's resources. coming back from a shower and discovering that its damn near impossible to do anything is unbelievably annoying. does anyone know of any way to disable, or prevent this process from running at random intervals? and before anyone suggests that I defrag my system, I run it regularly and have had dfrgntfs.exe run itself mere hours after a full defrag. please help.

Link doesnt work

Im guessing this is spyware faking a microsoft program. Try some antispyware and antivirus programs and search around google as well.

Sorry about that, here is the text from the website:

"The fact that the default defragmentor of Windows 2000 was developed by a company run by a Scientologist became a major issue in Germany. Therefore Microsoft created a set of instructions to enable consumers to remove it from their computer.

First, delete the following registry entries:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\SourcePath
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\ServicePackSourcePath
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\DefragPath
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\NodeTypes\{476e644a-aaff-11d0-b944-00c04fd8d5b0}\
Extensions\ContextMenu\{43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5}
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\NodeTypes\{476e644a-aaff-11d0-b944-00c04fd8d5b0}\
Extensions\NameSpace\{43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{80EE4901-33A8-11d1-A213-0080C88593A5}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{80EE4902-33A8-11d1-A213-0080C88593A5}
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns\{43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5}

Next, find and delete the following files from \windows\system32 and \windows\system32\dllcache:
dfrgfat.exe
dfrgntfs.exe
dfrgres.dll
dfrgsnap.dll
dfrgui.dll

After erasing the Defrag files, Windows may prompt you for the CD-ROM but you should just cancel out of that dialog and continue. You don't want to reinstall the files you've just erased.
Optionally, delete the Disk Defragmenter icon from the Start Menu.
Restart the computer."
