Default Device manager problem

ok for some reason when ever i open device manager, the window opens up but it is empty, there r no items at all listed, and i tried correcting the problem by going in to services.msc and selecting plug and play but found it to be all ready automatic. how else can i correct this problem so everything appears once again? o by the way the os is windows xp home edition.

if you create a MMC with device manager in it does it work?

start > run > mmc > ctrl + M > add > add device manager.

i don't know, but hopfully it doesn't screw up the computer
