I have a one terabyte external hard drive that I use for my less frequently used software and I have come across an annoying problem. I am using Smart Defrag 1.45 and it takes approximately twenty-four hours to defrag that hard drive. I tried the Windows 7 defrag, but its not any faster. Any solutions? Besides replacing the hard drive.

You can try Defraggler, it has full scan option and a quick scan option. Would insist to run the full scan and maybe leave it for the 24 hrs (doubt it would take so long again) and then every so often run the quick scans to keep the drive in shape

I would advise checking for and repairing the disk for errors before attempting to perform a defragmentation – either using the CHKDSK X: /R command in command line, or through My Computer.
