Default Dark Screen

Hey guys, I'm having a problem with my laptop. The problem is that when I turn it on the sreen is really dark. I really don't know much about computers so I have no idea what is going on. It is an HP pavillion if that helps.

Tried playing with the brightness switches? Is it dimmer sometimes than others?

How old is the laptop? What operating system does it run?

Yeah i tried adjusting the contrast ,sharpness, etc, but it didn't help at all. The computer does run. I'm not sure of running systems, and it is about 2 years old.

Like what version of Windows does it run? 98, 2000, XP, et cetera?
