corrupt/missing system file

I did what you said but nothing is booting from the cd rom drive. Only the floppy disk drive. I tried the cd on my other computer. I also tried Hirens boot cd but that didn't work. Would taking out the hard drive and putting it in a working computer as a slave drive work so I can get my information off of the laptop hard drive work?

Hello,

Is this the same laptop that you can not load Linux on as well? If so it seems that there is a problem with booting from CD on that laptop. Are yo usure the CD Drive is in working order?

Yea its the same laptop. I know the cd drive works, before this happened I play battle zone which is a cd rom game. Can i update the bios or replace the corrupt file using a floppy?

Would downloading and burning a windows xp pro start up disk to a cd and then boot up the laptop with it work?
