Default Copying to cd-rw or dvd-rw

I am running Windows XP(Home Edition)
I am finding it difficult to copy my files to a cd-rw or dvd-rw when I alter a file on my computer then when i try to write the ammended file to cd-rw it comes up with the message that the files on the cd-rw are `read only` and that I can`t write to the disc.
Anyone got any idea`s

The problem can occur because individual files cannot be deleted from CD-RW discs. The CD-RW disc cannot be used for random-access storage during a write function.
