what is a control panel applet?

are these the program executable links in the control panel

yes, programs that run from the control panel are control panel applets

i think their extension is cpl

you see the shortcuts to the applets. the applets are snapins to the mmc program.

MMC is a windows management console...a lot of the administration on Windows machines is done through MMC. By default Windows gives us a few default MMC's..Computer Management, Administrative Tools, Services etc etc..

Yes they all point to an applet..this just makes things convienient..rather then say launching items from a RUN line or manually browsing to the c:\windows\system32 folder with Windows Explorer.
