I have a Compac Presario X1000 running Windows XP Professional. Lately when I try to shut down the computer using the usual start .... shutdown etc, the computer gets as far as the "saving windows settings" splash screen and then stays there. The only way I can turn the computer off is to unplug it and pull the battery out. I have left it in that suspended mode for up to a half an hour to see if it would eventually shut down but it didn't. It has always shut down okay in the past. Can anybody suggest a solution to this annoying problem ?? Thanks.

if you unplug it from the wall, it may damage the system. I would wait forever and see what happens. On windows 98, you dont lose information (supposedly)
