Computer Hangs on Black Screen

My friend has a laptop, and when she turns it on, she see the Dell Logo, then the Windows Xp Logo, then it hangs on a black screen. She can boot into safe mode, but not fully, She see the Safe mode on four corners but explorer does not start.

Any Suggestions?

First try a simple reset of the BIOS see if that helps.

Next try booting into safe mode with command prompt

once you get to the command prompt type explorer.exe post back and let us know if it starts.

It boots into Safe Mode, but not fully. It says safe mode on all four corners but the screen is black and I can't get into CMD.

Have you tried last known good configuration? Have you tried System Restore?

Might be a case of re-installing Windows XP if there are boot issues. Try downloading Ultimate Boot Manager and putting it onto a cd or USB stick, then booting from it and testing the boot process.

Re-installing is the last option. There are plenty of things to try first.

With my suggestion make sure your booting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt not regular Safe Mode. Also did you reset the BIOS?
