Computer freezes when playing files

My computer has started to regularly freeze whenever I play any songs or video files, causing me to have to manually reboot. I've been using WMP, Winamp, Real Player, etc, but the problem persists. I have tried downloading any updates the players require, uninstalling and reinstalling them, defragmenting my hard drive, but nothing works. What could be causing this problem, and what can fix it ? Maybe there is a problem in your system files, I encounter one such problem--the problem got away, simple reinstall your operating system.

Don't reinstall your OS.
First try these things:

-instal newer DirectX version
-Try other soundcard
-Check wich soundcard your mediaplayers use, and try changing it
