Default Color Display Will Not Stay

When I attempt to change my color display to 256 Colors, it will not stay.
It reverts back to a prior setting.
In addition to the color display problem, my screen is all white at times.
I ramdomly depress keys on the keyboard, and when the color does appear, it is very faint.
Any help would be appreciated. TIA

what kind of vid card. sounds like the old Vanta TNT cards. Need to update the corrupted driver (but fully remove the old driver first).

Hi:
Thanks for the input. Not computer savvy.
How do I determine what video card I have, and,
how do I uninstall the video driver?
Details please. TIA

Running Windows 98.
