cd-rom not reading

i have a fairly new xps and for the past few days it hasn't been reading cds properly. ill have a cd in when i boot up and it has no problems recognizing the cd; however, whenever i change out with another cd, or dvd, it wont read this new one. i have to restart in order for it to read. the same problem occurs when there is no cd in and i try to put one in.

have you tried deleting it in device manager and then letting windows find it again?

try deleting the ide drivers too. this will restore the dma. what kind of cd rom is it?
