Can't get Vista SP1

My laptop still doesn't have Vista SP 1, and it's been out since March of this year. The microsoft website says to check Windows Update, to see if it comes in automatically, which it hasn't. Then it lists off a bunch of reasons why W.U. wouldn't get it automatically. I check over that lists, and as far as I know nothing of which applied to my laptop.

Is it okay for me to install it straight from the Microsoft website? Or is it going to mess things up?

And, what does SP 1 fix? I have a HP dv6449us, with Vista Home Premium.

Yeah, just use the one from Microsoft's website, it'll work fine.
