"cannot find server" message

my laptop, HP zv5320us w/AMD 3000 cpu, XP, 768mb memory, is bonkers. when trying to connect to the internet, i keep getting a "cannot find server" message. everything else on the computer seems to be fine. it does this with a wired or wireless connection. it shows that the connection is made, but "cfs". i run AVG and trendmicro on the system. i have run registry mechanic several times, but no result. any ideas other than a new re-install of the os? thank you very much for any information that you may have. That is to winsock xp fix. Try that, reboot, and see what happens. Also, tell IE to automatically detect settings.

What kind of IP address are you getting? Run an IPCONFIG /ALL and tell us your IP ADDRESS, DEFAULT GATEWAY, and DNS SERVERS. This will give us a better grasp of where the problem lies.
