Question 'Cannot Delete ______. File is in use by program/process.' Forceable?

Does anyone know of a way to forceably delete these files? I have the trouble of running across them frequently, and never remembering to delete them on the next boot up. I would think there would be a program to delete a file--that would close any process(es) that are linked to that file...but I have no idea what to look under. Does anyone know if that exists?

Try going into safe mode and deleting them using MS-DOS or if you can, load up DOS without windows loading.

if that doesn't work and you're using winXP/2K or any OS using an NTFS filesystem you'll need to take ownership of the file to be able to delete them:

Sorry, I guess I didn't state clearly what I meant! The thing is, I don't want to reboot the PC, boot to DOS, or go into Safemode. I was hoping there would be a utility that could foreably close any "processes" and/or "programs" that the error claims is using that file...Hence, making it so you didn't have to reboot. Maybe that doesn't exist? Might be a big security risk I guess. Ideas?

Thanks both!

Send a message via MSN to office politics

you should be able to kill explorer.exe in the task manager. you'll lose your desktop. With task manager still open click File | new task. run explorer.exe. now try to delete the file
