Default cancelling format

i started a format but i chose the full option and its taking to long. could i just manualy turn it off mid-format as i have tried a number of different key combinations to cancel it so i can partition again but with the quick format? if this does anything bad then i could just repair it using the xp cd as well couldnt i?
