I have always wondered can Windows Server 2003 SP2 be used as a normal operating system on a regular desktop pc like XP and can it run the following applications;

* Windows Media Player (11 Current)
* Windows Live Messenger 8 (MSN)
* Internet Explorer Version (7 Current)
* Nero Burning Rom
* Virus Software (Such AS AVG Free)

Server 2003 just looks like a modded and re-released XP for servers.

Also what's the support status for 2003 server (mainstream/extended etc)

Virus protection will be a problem, as all the free ones I know don't allow it to be installed in a corporate environment. The rest are fine though.

I run SP2 as a file and print server, but also run programs on it -
messenger, IE7..never ran media player but i know when i accidently click a media file it asks me to finish it's installation, so i can only assume it will work.

don't know about nero, might load it on later this afternoon if i'm not busy to check it out

as for virus...i run eTrust anti-virus, never tired AVG

you'd have to check out the microsoft site for support
