BSOD Help!

Hey there guys,
Im fixing a PC for a friend and he recived a BSOD error. I was just wondering where i could go to find out BSOD error codes etc?

This is the error:
STOP: c0000218{Registry File Failure}
The registy cannot load the hive file (hive)
\systemRoot\System32\Config\Software

If anyones gots any ideas, please yell out..

SYMPTOMS
When you try to install Microsoft Windows XP on a new hard disk that is formatted with the NTFS file system, you may receive the following error:
Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate
This error occurs after Windows XP copies the installation files to the hard disk and the computer restarts. Back to the top

CAUSE
This problem may occur if either of the following conditions is true: • The hardware where you are trying to install Windows XP may not be compatible with Windows XP.
• The hard disk where you are trying to install Windows XP may be damaged.

So either the XP install went bunk or the HDD is bad.

Well it wasnt a fresh install. He came to me explaining that he had had this error. Prior to this he had another BSOD error stating UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. So my guess is that HDD is on the way out. I have got it back up and running now but thanks for the reply
