Boot from USB - Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard - 3030 Dell Wyse box / Thin client

Hello all,

I am in need of a bit of assistance. My company uses Dell wyse boxes/thin clients to access RDS servers. Some of us have regular PC machine workstations; but those who are on wyse boxes are using the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard edition.

I am trying to re-image a 3030 wyse box(1) by using a reference 3030 wyse box(2) that is in good condition.

I went into bios by holding down the DEL key which then prompted me to use a password. Once I got into bios, I changed settings to enable USB and I changed the priority of booting to USB as number 1. The USB I am trying to boot has a wyse firmware tool that allows me to capture an image from the current referenced working wyse box 2, and then I'll be able to re-image wyse box 1.

However, when I am trying to boot from USB by holding down P(button that takes you to boot menu), it will refresh the page and take me back to the menu where I can choose what to boot from- a constant cycle. I have changed the port location of where I input the USB FD multiple times, but I am still unable to get a proper boot. It looks like to me that bios may be bypassing the 'Boot from USB' priority and forces Windows to take me to the login screen for our servers.

I am not sure how to get past this.. I've gone to other forums including Dell and Microsoft for help; but the response times are very long, and no one seems to know how to get the USB to boot.

If anyone has any advice at all, that would be wonderful!

Thanks again,

M

*UPDATE* I was able to get the USB to boot by changing the boot mode to both in Bios.

However, when it accepts the USB, I get an error from the Dell Wyse USB Imaging Tool

"USB key is not configured for proper Architecture. (error code: 313)." I've looked this up and am continuing to research, but I haven't found anything yet.

If anyone has any valuable advice, I would love to hear it!

Thanks again,

M

The error that you mentioned in your update sounds like you have the wrong operating system version loaded. Are there other options that you can load onto that drive?

Well the thing is, I have an image of Windows Server 2012 R2 for a 3040 thin client.. I have used this same USB FD to re-image another 3040 thin client, and it worked perfectly fine. I did this right before I attempted to capture the image of the 3030 thin client.

I have no image of Windows Server 2012 R2 for a 3030 thin client on the USB FD. I do have a running and working Windows Server 2012 R2 model 3030 I am trying to capture the image through the Wyse USB Imaging Tool, but then I get that error once I get the USB FD to boot via the boot menu.

I really am at a loss for words haha; I've been trying to take care of this issue for two days, and I'm making very little progress.

Possibly, but the documentation for 3.1 does mention a 3030... check out this link and look at page 12 where the supported devices are listed. Make sure you're using an approved flash drive and the correct (x86 or x64) structure, which are listed on page 7 of the link. This page also mentions that you can't house both 32-bit and 64-bit on the same flash drive, so that could be the entire problem if you're running the wrong architecture. Hope this helps out! You may consider grabbing the new version as well, which is 3.1. I've linked that below as well:

That's the thing though. All 3 models of our wyse boxes take the same x64 structure.. I will get the new version and get back to you with results! Thanks again for all of your help :)

Nope, I tried, didn't work. I used a different USB FD and I prepared it for the Image pull with the image tool; but when I put it into the 3030, it still comes up with wrong architecture...
