Angry boot up memory test

Hi All,
When my winxp system boots up the memory test continues to loop without end unless I esc out. Is this a problem? What is the purpose of this? Also the very next thing it does is askes me to select what to boot from. I know I can set up my system to always atomatically boot from my hard drive but forget how. Any good words?
