My friend has an old laptop running Windows 95. Whenever you go to start it up it says "Invalid System Disk" (referring to the hard drive). I used a Windows 95 boot disk to start it up and got a command prompt. I ran windows\win to start it up but when I did, it said that it could not find himem.sys. I checked and the file was there and I even replaced it but it still said that it could not find it. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do besides formatting and reinstalling windows?

I think that reformatting is your nest option. Look for windows 98 SE. Much better than 95!!!

It's likely that the hard drive has errors or corrupt data in the boot sector.
I don't recall what command to put in at the DOS prompt to repair the boot record.
I would recommend running scan disk to see if there are errors.
A friend of mine had a similar problem and it was the hard drive going south.
