Default Best music/video player?

What's the best FREE music/video player out there? I have WMP10, and it's okay, doesn't have some of the functionality I wish it did. So what's the best out there?

the old system...
EVGA GeForce 6600GT
Enermax Whisper II 535W PSU
1.2 TB
1GB Ram
Chaintech VNF4 Ultra

Ya I've heard good things about winamp but have no idea if it's free or not. I really like iTunes but it uses up alot of resources. I'm just sticking with WMP10 cause it has that cool auto volume equalizing thing.
