Backspace and Delete keys

Recently, when I depress the Backspace or the Delete key in IE6 or Word, my computer only backspaces or deletes one letter at a time, even when I keep the key depressed. It doesn't do it all the time, but it's very annoying when it does this. (I use Win XP.) Any suggestions? :bald:
