Default Anyone heard of free VMWare desktop app?

Someone told me VMWares Desktop app is free (similap to Virtual PC) I went to the site and you have to pay for it.

Am I missing something or is it a pay app? MS Virtual PC is free so I might just use that.

VMWare Player is free. The rest of the VMWare apps are pay for services. At least as far as i know.

VMWare Server is free. You just need to register with a valid e-mail address.

Cool, I see it now.

Can anyone answer a few questions about VMWare?

If I were to install it on my home PC for lab purposes, does it take any resources when you are not running a VM Server? Like if you have a XP VM using 512MB of RAM does it hold the RAM or does it only take it when it is running? I'm sure the HDD space is taken even when it is not running but what about other system resources? I just want to make sure it won't bog me down when I am not using it.

Thanks for your help.

It only holds the RAM while it is running. Other than that you can use the resources for other purposes. The HDD is gone while you have the VM stored.
