I admit I broke the law for about a week. I know it wasn't smart I just had to buy a new copy of windows. What i mean by free trial is the time before activation.

How do I do that?

You can simply copy them to somwhere on D: and copy them back after you format. To change your boot options you can edit boot.ini in notepad. If you do lose them you can boot from your XP disk into recovery mode and restore them from that. Googling the file names will give you loads of info.
*Note* These files are only needed when XP resides on a partition other than C:. If you use partition magic to merge C: and D: you wont need them.
