Hi all,

IÂ’ve just reinstalled XP Pro on my computer, everything works fine except for one really annoying thing: when I go to download updates or extras from the Microsoft website Windows freezes.
I can download updates automatically if I set the auto updates timer but if I try to do it manually the second I click “express” or “custom” to start the check, the system freezes.

Straight after I reinstalled Windows I did update manually without any problems, however, as soon as ActiveX was installed the problems started. I have tried adjusting the settings but the problem still persists.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Hi Shawn,

Specs are as follows:

XP Pro SP2
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3400+ (2.21 GHz, 2 GB RAM)
Sound: Realtek AC97
Video: Nvidia GEForce 6600
Storage: Maxtor6B200M0 80GB & Maxtor 6Y080M0 200GB (both have NTFS partitions)

I hope this covers everything.

Many thanks.

Hi,

This is the second install with the same problem and i've installed before on other computers in exactly the same way without this problem occuring.

I've tried downloading in Safe Mode but cant even seem to get a connection.

Any ideas?

When you say "connection" do you mean how i connect to the internet?
If so it's a standard broadband cable connection through a UK company called Telewest.

My usual browser is Firefox but for Windows updates/downloads i always use IE.

Hope this helps...
